    Hey adventurists,
I would like to share with you a route I have been working on for some time now for central mass. The idea behind this track is that it mimics the well know Mid State Hiking Trail. Obviously the hiking trail is illegal to ride on, but I have paralleled the trail system with legal class 4 roads, and trails. This route may not be all dirt, but it for sure is the most off road that you will get for Central Mass. This track has just about everything that you would want for an adventure ride, Tar, Dirt, Mud, Sand, Rocks, Water Crossings, and some wonderful sights to see. It is very much doable on a small enduro bike, perfect for your mid size 650, and can be slightly challenging on a full size 1200. All and all its comes in just under 100 miles, with plenty of gas stations and restaurants along the way. The trail can easily be completed in either direction, north to south, south to north. Essentially it starts at Mount Watatic and ends in Douglas State Forest. Please be respectful of the trail and the neighbors that live in and around the area. I hope you all enjoy the route as much as I have scouting it.

Up towards ashburnham area there is an awesome and long water crossings. I've been through it a hand full of times. When you get out to the middle it gets a little soft, so stay on the throttle. It's about knee deep for reference.

The route travels through Rutland State Forest so be sure to look out the the solitary confinement cells from the old camp out there.

Just noticed this...kinda funny that my buddy and I turned around right there last year while exploring. Couldn't tell how deep it was and we were on big bikes. Glad we did, cause I'm not really interested in going up to the knees!

Thanks for putting this together btw.

Hey SRTie4k, that's a shame you turned around! nothing better than a good water crossing. Should you travel up that way again, there is a trail about 100ft back that will take you around the puddle. It is wide enough for an ATV.

MADS, I updated the route to include that section of trail. Thank you for the input!

Interesting, we didn't see any bypasses, and we approached it from the opposite side. I even took a pic after we decided to turn around:

I normally don't mind moderate water crossings, but with a TKC70 rear I want to know they're firm bottom crossings, and that one felt like pure sand when we probed it.

I was thinking of running this on sat or sun. Besides the water crosing "puddle" can it be done on a 650 strom with oem (non-knobbie) tires???...still wearing out the factory rubber before getting e-07s.

I did the complete route from south to north last week on an XT250. It was pretty sweet. That water crossing that concerns everyone, came up to just over my foot pegs. The bottom was pretty solid and I didn't feel any ruts in it. I stuck close to the side so I could dab my foot on the bank of the puddle. I found this nice camping spot along the trail in Oakham State Forest. The co-ordinates of it are N42° 19.408' W72° 00.632' exactly. No one and no thing bothered me there all night. I thought this route went right through them prison camps. Somehow I missed them. Anyway, thanks for laying out this track. Very nice ride.

That's too bad you missed the camp. It literally at the corner of Flint Rd and Spencer Rd. in Rutland (see the map photo above). Its hidden behind a little bit of brush on the west side of Spencer Rd., but its there.

You should be fine. There are some areas where the ground is soft, just take your time and youll make it.
