This is a place for current and past Nighthawk riders who met at the Kickstand Motorcycle Lodge and on the old Nighthawk-forums.com. These riders have continued to connect and occasionally ride together on the now defunct UJM forum. Hopefully, that connection can continue on this thread. 750posing.jpg

Great idea Dale! Maybe add a link to this year's KSL so people can sign up (I just signed up)?

Got a new bike this week!

    [IMG]Untitled by jspringator, on Flickr

    Versys 300 ABS.

Perfect for the KSL run. The only thing wrong with it is that it is so whisper quiet I'm aftaid Dubb won't like it. You know he likes those obnoxiously loud exhausts that I absolutely detest.

These things are a pain to break in. The manual says 4,000 rpm for 500 miles. That is almost impossible to do. 4,000 rpm in 6th is 45 mph. I did about 10-15 miles like that, then started edging it up a little bit. At the end of 110 miles, I was primarily riding between 6 and 7 thousand RPM, with an occassional foray to 8. I let it go to 75 mph one time; it was effortless.

The Madstad has been ordered, and I will get a build date for the Russell next week. I'm expecting the week of August 20.

Objectively, I should sell the XT225. Subjectively, I don't want to. I bought it 6 years ago for $2,200 or so. It had 200 miles. Originally, its job as to ride on the front of my Excursion while it was towing a 9,000 pound travel trailer. It was one of the few bikes light enough to work. I've since sold the Excursion and the travel trailer, so the bike is searching for a purpose. I've done so much to it it is nothing like when I bought it. Now, it will keep up with traffic. I could designate it as my RV motorcycle and put it on a carrier instead of a trailer. But then I would miss the high speed stability of the baby Versys. I looked at the prices on Cycle Trader, and the ask for similar bike without the mods and Russell seat was $2,500. I don't know what the cam, HC piston, racing valve springs, RDL dual seat, Clarke tank, rack, SS front brake line, scientered front pads, LED headlight and running lights, hand guards, tuned exhaust, quick turn throttle, Madstad windshield and Vibranator bar inserts are worth. Or how much it reduces the price. It is works well for anything but interstate. Unfortunately, most rides around here involve some interstate, and no one wanted me to take it, and the Versys is far superior. It will do 70 actual (75 indicated), but I would describe its disposition as nervous. It is a lot better since I relaced an 18" wheel on the front. I experienced some mod failures along the way. The TM33 pumper carb never worked right. The Lectron carb was worse. I put the stock carb back on. It is loud though.

    Thanks for letting me ramble.

I wish I could afford to buy the XT, but I’m saving for my next surgery. Did get out for a few miles yesterday, all close to home.

Great bike! Did you get it new? Does it have ABS? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it once you've had it for a while. It'll be fun to wind that thing out. What's the red line - like 13k?

12,000. Haven’t come close because of break in. ABS. I anticipate this will become my do it all bike, with the ST for long interstate hauls. I could never see myself touring over long distances until I rode this bike. I am much more comfortable on the Versys that I am on the ST, at least on day rides. I’ve had some front fork work done on the ST that may make it easier to handle. I hope so. I will pick it up this week.

Throw it up on the Louisville Dual Sport Facebook page.

Someone will snatch it up as the weather breaks.
