Not much you can really do .

They can climb any fence.. When I go away from the house into the woods to pick wild fruit .
I'm normally armed. HB is all the time...

He was just passing though we have about 7 resident bears on our mountain ridge.
Yes they tear up stuff.. They live here too.

But when you live where we do in VA. They act like bears..
A little different then the ones that live in the more populated areas ..
Those bears don't spook as well..
These Bears know they can be shot at and shot . So they are easier to run off.

Although we have gotten troublesome bears like 7 yrs. when the 2 button ear tagged bear
Was about 70 feet from be ,while I was planting beans in the garden..

This past hunting season 86 bears were bagged,,,
And they didn't even put a dent in the population in our area..

And yes they are scary. We have seen many here on the farm. And yes on the porch , foot prints on the trucks. Teeth marks on the shop doors..
One tried to break into our feed building only broke a small window that he couldn't get through .. He tore the directive trim off the door..

But they are bears and that's what they do...

We also have a lot of fruit trees around, and they wee in almost of the cherry trees . Now with berry season right around the corner ,they will be in to them.
    That's when I can encounter them , Solo ..

meh, they are just big fluffy bears. They like being scratchd behind the ears. But then they recognize Squatch as a friend

I agree Lady D, that's a healthy little 2-year old. You can judge a bears overall size by it's ears. When they are young, the ears stand up and are clearly recognizable on top of their head. But their ears never get any larger as they grow. So, a large mature bear might look like it doesn't even have any ears. They become less and less visible as they age.

Also, right now they are in their Summer range. Everything is about food and nursery. They go where the food is and your place has food. The mommas go where there is food and safety for the little ones. That bear is probably a 100-150 pound male that was recently sent packing by his momma. So he's on the prowl. Come fall, he'll be somewhere else.

Most black bears are scared of people. Want nothing to do with us. Put a barking Beagle or two on your place and the bears will stop coming around. As much as they dislike people, they really don't like dogs.

They are having a major population surge in Virginia. There are fewer hunters every year, so more bears. There's more and more development, so the bears are encroaching on suburbia. They're going to be a big problem before long. I'm finding scat on property I can bow hunt in Clifton, Fairfax County.

Our area is full of bear hunters...
The bears have thousands and thousands of acres to roam on plus the ridges.

We are NOT in suburbia , that's for sure . But Suburbia is all ready having problems now !
They send some of there troublesome bears over to our CO. As I mentation earlier .
We believe this bear was born here.. No evidence of ear tags.
He did crush down the fence in the woods, HB fixed it, so the cattle didn't get into the yard.

We believe he is in the size range of 250 and up ..
Some buddies pm'ed me and said every bit of 350.

100 - 150 is a tad small for him.. The photos don't do him Justus .
I really wished he had stood up. That would have been a cool shot.

I work at a bear check in station where 86 bears were weighted and the tooth pulled.

And you are very right we have a lot of food on our mountain. That's for sure.
Been living with bear here for 12 years.
Every now and then they do wreck something .Other then the fruit trees..

There truly is nothing like seeing them just roam around..

A tooth is pulled on every bear ,
It sits right behind the Canine ...

To hunt bears, residents and nonresidents must purchase a bear license in addition ... Tooth collection is mandatory, and the tooth envelope is part of the Blackbear permit , A person who kills a bear shall submit a first premolar tooth .

    ThX for the info........Seems weird......

Kill a bear and you're required to pull a tooth.
The tooth is submitted to someone, some dept. ?
And what purpose does that serve ? Age ? Detect disease ?

    Awesome pix!!

No bears here in flat central Jersey, but plenty of Coyotes now...they're pretty common, although pretty secretive, I've yet to snap a pic of one I've seen. (pretty sure that's what crushed Pete's larynx, he was a big big Tom, and made off with Delilah) Same with the foxes with being secretive. They have those cute videos of them being all sweet and shit, but as soon as I pull out my camera they're off.

Very rural here by the way. Burlington County is the least populated in the state and you can tell "ayaaya, ayaaya, ayaaya.....cooo, cooo, cooo, cooo!!"

Well once again mice chewed through the discharge drain hose on the dishwasher..
This is the 2nd one in less then 6 months...

This was my fix... I ordered a new hose OEM from ebay ,
As they are not available local . I couldn't find any hoses with a metal on the outside
    for a discharge hose...
I had this great idea, remembering that they make hose dress up kits for bikes and cars..
So I started looking local once again.. And nope nothing..
Some auto places had not idea what I was talking about :lol2
    Back to ebay..
This is what I found and got : for 12 bucks and free shipping..
I wish I thought of this the last time..:baldy
Stainless Steel FLAT Braid Sleeving 1/8" - 3/4" SIZE 304 STAINLESS STEEL 5.5'.
As you can see is fits over very nice !
Them little buggers will not chew on SS....I hope ...:D
    [IMG]

You can trim it with a pair of scissors !

I used silicon self sticking tape on the frayed ends..

I had to leave this much on this end as it goes in to a rubber end on the sink plumbing ..

I'll hook every thing back up today....

I though I would share, in case someone out there might have the same issue one day...

    Good idea.
The rats may chew through that tape.
Maybe use a hose clamp around the ends...
