No culture or food for me[emoji12]
I bring everything i need to survive for 5 days on bike
Minus some beers and snacks and I usually stop for a sandwich someplace for lunch
But i cook off my jetboil
I bring a cooler with ice and beer and water and food with me
My buddy on the other hand is know to arrive at camp then have to head out to find cigarettes or whatever else he needs
I am always like what you didnt know you were going away
He drives me nuts, so this solo trip will be awesome

I love riding at my own pace with not a care in the world

It is requirement for everyone staying in one re of the High Peaks. The yellowish Eastern High Peaks section in the map below.
[IMG] You might be camping above it Rangers will will check and it is for good reason. Last year friends were maybe 30 feet up rock climbing about a 100 yards from the rod in the middle of the day when a bear came up and ripped his pack open for food. They yelled at the bear and it ignored them.

    good to know
i have had more then a few bear encounters in the past 3 years
so i am very vigalant, my friends make fun of me but they will be sorry one day
    car camping story
i had a bear in upper delaware river area come into our camp in broad daylight
we just got back from hiking to a water fall, we park our cars up by the road and our camp is setup 200' or more down
i grab some peperoni and cheese and crackers from car , bring it down to fire pit area
i light the fire, i walk back up to cars to help my buddy with the beer cooler (no more then 5 minutes)
as we walk back down a bear was in between the fire and our camp chairs and table
he knocked the bear spray i left on table next to crackers and seen me and he just grabbed the crackers and looked at us
my buddy was in shock, i said watch him as i went back up and grabbed the shotgun i carried in car
as i came back down i see a second bear just to the left of my friend, and he didnt even releize he was there
we yelled and he just looked at us
so i fired a warning shot, and he finally took off
it was like racoons but with bears.....
god knows what happens at night after drinking the beers and turning in
    great time to be alive:lol3
i always sleep with bear spray and a knife, but find prevenative measures best

Thanks for the tips- yes I am talking about Mt Washington. I want to see how great it is in person.
As for camping, and this may sounds stupid, but how do you find a campsite that is not run by state? Can anyone go and just find a spot to camp anywhere on forest land? Aren't there restrictions- esp for bringing vehicles into certain places? I do find those day-maker lights a bit overkill in a forest- I don't mind meeting like-mided people.
I would like to see culture and food and I am guessing the New England area is not really for all that lol.

In national forests you can camp anywhere within the guidelines
Ie: 150' from road, trail, waterbody unless marked no camping for up to 14 days without a permit
State forests are similar with restrictions of 3 nights before a permit is required or groups of more hen 10
Also in ny they have what they call motorized campsites near bodies of water
Ie ,lakeside, riverside marked with a camp here disc
    Some even have shooting areas
All practice leave no trace policy's
Dont park in front of gates, bikes are easy
    Dont block trails, ect

Thanks- that helps. One question- if you camp away from campsites where do you go to the bathroom? Surely, don't want to be down in the bushes when a bear comes up from behind or something.... (in the Himalayas, one of our group members did not want to use the camp's hole-in-the-ground tented toilet and decided to go behind some rocks and was confronted by a barking shepherd dog- was hilarious)

Did a trip up to portland/Mt. washington on the HOG few years back. Rode all the way to Mt. Washington just to get rejected. Wouldn't let me ride up with 50mph winds or so they claimed at the top. so did the next best thing since i was planning on heading back to NYC. Hit bear notch road, the 112 and some other backroads till i found a cheap motel and bar in bradford Vermont. Some days i wish i was still on those backroads...

This is possibly a repeat message but here is a Public Service Announcement: motorcyclists beware, as NYPD is ticketing riders for having their visors up for "equipment violation." I had another rider warn me about this in the last few months and hadn't seen it until today. I was ticketed. I commute to NYC daily from NJ. Always full gear head to toe and full face helmet, but OMG! my visor was up. Frankly a ridiculous and obvious revenue generation ploy and an excuse to harass riders. I suppose shorts and flip flops are ok, just so long as I wear a brain bucket and ANSI approved goggles.

Where did this happen exactly? Some precincts tend to me more "proactive" about harassing bikers than others...

Lincoln Tunnel "exhaust area." I made the right turn off 41st onto 10th Ave. and the guy walks up to me while I am queued up at the 42nd street traffic light. I have seen the NYPD run "sting" operations in this zone before, once was pulled over for making a right off 42nd onto 10th Ave. from the middle lane (as opposed to the right lane which backs up for a block). That officer let me off with a warning after finding my documents in good order. Today I was being a good boy...just didn't have my visor down. With all the stupid stuff I see huge trucks and transit busses doing all day/everyday in this town, its rather depressing that NYPD feels that harassing riders for visors up is a good use of resources and serves the public interest.

Random related question to the moto-touring- thinking about doing a quick tourist visit to Montreal for a day. What do I need to keep in mind when crossing the border?

Sorry to hear that mate. The popos must have been having a slow day- surprising because of the million violations that I see being committed by four wheeled vehicles...

According to Lil'Steve know how to "hide" the trowel.
I do it all the time. Pretty quick in and out. Not sure why, but seems to be even faster with Enhanced License versus passport.

Easy crossing into Canada and into Mexico. Coming back to the US can be more of a hassle. You don't need a passport but you may be spoken to harshly. Probably more so on the southern border.
I did get yelled at by the Canadian Customs guy in the booth while crossing at Niagara 2 months ago for not stopping at the invisible (to me anyway) stop sign. His exact quote is "I guess they don't have stop signs where you come from, eh?"
