Even weirder - it started in the middle of a week-long trip few weeks ago. No updates or other changes whatsoever - on day 3 it just started draining my battery like crazy. At first I thought my charger got broken and then my phone but both are fine and work perfectly with Google Maps, Offline Maps&Navigation and Waze. I had OSMand on the spare phone and it killed it's battery too.

I was support truck driver for a rally a few weeks ago and even with my phone plugged into the charger it was draining if the screen was on. With the screen off it was picking up very slowly however. This was on my Samsung S5. It's quite annoying and it's too bad because I like OsmAnd.

I have been using both Osmand and Locus to navigate the Transamerica trail the last 14 days. I I select the track I want to navigate in navigation settings. I select snap to roads and them then select from my position and then my destination which is usually a favorite. I then switch over to Locus select and display the track. Select guidance and have locus displaying the track and Osmand giving me voice instructions via my Sena. Osmand will give me distance to next turn and tell me to turn left or right. It doesn't give me some none intersection turns but I haven't minded those when traveling at speed. In the twisty gravel roads of NC I just tuned them out. The voice instructions are really helpful when you do a lot of stand up riding. The only irritating thing I have experienced with Osmand is the constant announcing that you are passing a favorite, especially when you are stopping it starting near favorite. If anyone knows how to fix that. I would appreciate the info. As for power consumption. I am using a wireless charger and with the Osmand running in background and Locus display on continuously the phone will stay at the charge it started with it won't loose power or gain power. I have a kyocera duraforce pro.

The more I think about it and read other people's experiences with OSMand, the more I am convinced that the power drain issue is related to the increased display refresh rate / map rendering/redrawing frequency in navigation mode.

Is this power draw issue noted only in navigation mode, not when just showing track on screen?

I like locus zoom to speed settings and locus direction of travel setting. I can also set track line size on locus. The locus theme that i am using also show more roads.

To get rid of the announcement of favoroutis:
    1. Go 'to settings'
    2. 'Navigation settings' (--> pick profile)
    3. Go to 'Announce...' (somewhere in the middle of the page)
    4. Check/Uncheck the items you want to have announced
Regarding the battery drain, I also faced this issue on a 3 day trip last weekend. I use a wireless charger which in the past could easily charge the battery while navigating a gpx file. Last weekend it seems to slowly discharge as well :(
I haven't investigated on the issue so much yet, but what I did find is that it could be related to the rendering of the map. This also reminded me that I did install the Contour Lines plugin which might be a cause :hmmmmm.

I don't have Contour Lines installed and still have the excessive power drain issue. As I mentioned above (and you seem o reach the same conclusion) - it must be something related to the rendering of the map. Maybe they made it refresh at higher frequency in order to make it smoother?

Hmm, I didn't have any issues with my charger not keeping up with the screen on in navigation mode a couple of months ago. However, it was a battery hog. If I forgot to plug it into the charger, the battery dropped FAST.

I leave next week for a trip, and I'm concerned now about battery life. Looks like I'll have to give it a quick test run this weekend. I do have a 3.1 A USB charger on my bike. Hopefully this will overcome the battery drain.

You have a twint port USB charger that is 2.1A + 1A. You can not draw more than 2.1A through a USB connection and even for that you need a cerified cable.

I am new to the osm thing
But i have taken a few trips of 10-12 non stop
1st day i started with phone not fully charged
And it had trouble keeping up charge, i was starting to turn off screen to keep up with demand when possible
Next 10-12 hour trip i started with a fully charged battery and i had no issues keeping up with demand

Hmm, that's good to know. I didn't really notice one or charging better than the other.

I use a 2.1amp port on my bikes with a Samsung Gakaxy S6 Active. Unless my cord gets a loose connection, it'll alwas maintain if not charge my phone. I haven't used OSMand+ in a few weeks, so if there was a bad update recently maybe somethings going on.

Waze, that I consider a battery hog, doesn't drain my phone eirher.

Some 3.1A chargers are "smart" and can output 2.1A to either port but not to both simultaneously (for this you need a 4.2A charger).

Anyway, 2.1A is the maximum allowed by the USB standard.

I discovered this power drain issue with Osmand on a week-long trip two weeks ago. Waze, Google Maps, Offline maps&Nav are all fine on the same setup.

Osmand is also fine with the screen off but not very useful this way :-) The "screen on" option is also useless with GPX tracks as it considers every twist in the track to be a turn and the screen is on 99% of the time.

They better fix it as I have the paid version for several years now and I'm quite happy with it for following GPX tracks.

Is it worth going back to 3.0.3 & see if it still happens for you?

Using the latest version of OsmAnd+ (3.0.4) and can't say that I've noticed any unusual battery drain. Recently returned from a 2½ week trip with 7-11 hours of riding per day, screen was on ~70% of the time and the charge never dropped below 20%. No external power source was used, the 5000 mah battery on the phone (Nomu S10 Pro) was enough. I don't use that phone for anything but navigation, so no sim card & wifi, cell service etc. turned off and all non essential services disabled.

On one occasion I did run into a problem with a longer route (~670km), OsmAnd got stuck calculating the route and after 15 minutes it had drained 10% from full charge, but a quick reboot sorted that. Seeing as many are using gpx-tracks for navigation got me wondering if's doing some constant calculations in the background when using a gpx. I only use OsmAnd to navigate from A to B with some intermediate points - but haven't yet had the chance to test if it makes any difference in battery consumption when using a gpx-track.
