Are fair as accuracy goes both products are much the same as they use the same base data for roads (despite what GPSOz says). I have the old V6 Oztopo maps and the V8 one seems about the same. One thing I do like about it over the Garmin Product (I have both) is that the Oztopo keeps the detail of minor roads at a higher zoom level than the Garmin Maps do.

I think its very good. Clear screen that can have layers turned on or off.
Where I am its very accurate with small forestry trails creeks etc.
I use it on the bike and in the 4wd.
Tbe routable feature is a lifesaver when completely list however I have found at times its taken me on some hairy routes.
Backupfrom gpsoz has been great to date replcing my sd card after almost a year when it shit itself

In the top image, Garmin’s topographical map depicts geographical features that don’t exist while failing to include potentially hazardous cliffs (click to enlarge).

Thank you as well workhorse, sounds that it’s a very good product.
I’ve never had a problem with Garmin devices, but I’ve read that their after sales service is not the best.

I think on contours side OzTopo is much better than the Garmin maps, roads pretty on par. I generally don't much overland walking, but am changing that this year.

I spoke to Brian this morning:

New base Map with far more detail

Many more detailed camping spots - less grey nomad related camp sites

    Hi All,

Re: Are fair as accuracy goes both products are much the same as they use the same base data for roads (despite what GPSOz says)

Just to put the record straight, we don't use the same data for roads. Garmin uses data from HERE formerly NAVTEQ. We use data from a combination of sources, Map Data Services and State bodies like LPI, VicMap etc.

Our contour base data is from GeoScience Australia and not the SRTM Global Data that others use.

RE V9. Yes is currently work in progress and as much as I would really like to say nearly done its not quite there yet. We have taken on a whole new roads data base so it processing from scratch rather than an incremental build. Why did we do this? The data we were using was getting old and updates not as forthcoming as we wanted. It contained roads that never got built, had overgrown, been closed or went through gated private property. So time for a refresh.

So lots of other new stuff in V9 too, CAMPS9 (low cost and free camp sites), heaps more POIs (fuel stations, cafe etc), walking tracks, Vic and NSW high country huts, out of the way camping sites (from Boiling Billy Publications), more marine data for SA, Qld and Vic (Boat ramps, lights, buoys, markers).

All the "old" features will stay, 10m turn offable contours, tracks at high zoom level, outback features (bores, windmills, fence lines)

BTW I don't frequent this forum often. One of our customers alerted us to this post but if you ever have any questions don't hesitate to email.

    cheers

PS Meant also to say that if you purchase V8 now you'll be entitled to a free upgrade to V9
