Do any ADVriders jump through the hoops necessary to ride the trails at Pittsfield State Forest, Beartown State Forest, or October Mountain State Forest in Western Massachusetts? Or, how about Tolland State Forest?

Please, speak up if you ride at any of these off road trails.

get the orv stickers. your pocketbook will thank you if you get caught without them. can be upwards of $1500-2000 in fines. join a club like www.mudslinger.org

In Tolland S.F. you also need to be street registered.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a big issue with it but some folks aren't pleased that they must also get the free daily permit in addition to the annual sticker (at least for all but Tolland).

I only did the permit thing once and it was pretty quick and easy,[that was before the Mass sticker thing] I didn't know you need them for October too.?. If you have never been to any of them I think October is the best.

You also need a day permit which is free for some of these areas. They are limiting it to 50 per day to reduce impact. You can call ahead and reserve them.

Do street registered bikes require a sticker? If they do then oops...I went to October Mountain last year and had a blast dicking around on my Strom. I saw another guy on a KLR doing the same.

It's worth noting that my bike was registered in MA at the time. I'm not sure if I was on the "trails" or just dirt roads that happen to be in October mountain. I never saw any signs or anything telling me to keep out..hmm

    I refuse.
My bikes are already registered with street plates, I don't need a second registration.
As far as the "daily permit", that's a joke too. We are only user group required to get one, come with a horse, bicycle or hiking boots you can come and go as you please but come with a motorcycle and you are targeted.
The permit thing needs to go away, I tell DCR that every chance I get and some with DCR agree with me.

If you ride a motorcycle on the off-road trails at Pittsfield, Beartown, October Mtn, or Tolland State Forests a Massachusetts ORV (off road vehicle) annual permit (sticker) is required regardless of if, or where, the bike has a street registration/plate. At Pittsfield, Beartown, October Mtn State Forests you also need a free daily permit (via email or phone). At Tolland you do not need a daily permit, but the bike must be street registered (any state) and of course have the MA ORV annual sticker.

Considering there is limited legal places to ride in CT, the inconsistent and extra cost to ride in MA is worth it.

Ride now, they will all be closed soon.
Mass is just making it inconvenient for motorcyclists to ride in the parks so they can close the areas due to the lack of motorcycles using the trails.:D

Not really true any more. The folks in charge now are much more bike and ATV friendly. The trail miles have been increasing in both Pittsfield State Forest and October Mountain State Forest the last year or so.
October Mountain has some challenging "roads" and no permits are required on those. The trails that require the day permits are pretty well marked in most cases.
The Rangers and EPO's really want more riders so their jobs are justified. Their words not mine.

It is not an annual permit, it is a registration (MGL Chapter 90B)

Prior to Chapter 202 of the Acts of 2010 being passed any vehicle with a street registration (MGL Chapter 90) was exempt from the ORV registration (Chapter 90B). DCR pushed very hard to get that exemption removed; the only reason was to extort more money from the riders. That was told directly to me by the former DCR Chief of Bureau of Recreation.
Currently the lions share of that funding is used for enforcement and to buy the EPO's brand new 350 EXC's. The ORV registration was always in place for ORV vehicles it has only been brought to light recently because the law was changed hiking up the fines.

I am very aware of what the law says, but I refuse to fall into their trap.

Before the sticker and day pass thing I used to ride my DRZ in there once in awhile. Bear town was the only park where I would see a ranger EVERY TIME I was there.
