Ah, cheers anyway @bingbong. I've asked around down here Algarve/Alentejo border but nobody seems to have it, nor online so far. I'll persevere and/or try Spain next.

During my recent road trip to the Uk I couldn't believe the amount of fires that Portugal has suffered this year, the worst i have ever seen since living here. I hope everyone on here is safe and well.... and also those around you.

All ok with me but I noticed that @Mac Ka had a lot of fires going on near him. Hope he, and everyone else, is alright. Was a pretty extreme summer as far as fires go, to say the least.

Bit of an update on this, in case anyone else hereabouts is looking for ACF50, Nippy Normans in the UK do sell it but can't send most of the options as they are aerosols, but...they can and will send this remaining option which is about a litre of the stuff plus a tube of the grease, plus, I think, an applicator spray bottle type thing (not quite sure if that is included as well, will see). It all comes to about 50UKP.

As you are from Ontario I'm guessing you are an Azores decendent? I lived on Sao Miguel between 2000 - 2004 (in Santa Rita - just east 0f Ponta Delgada), then left before I went completely stir crazy. Interesting place though, and for sure great riding, especially if you have a bike that'll go off road. Be good to see some pics if and when you have time.

Islands tend to do that, after living in Antigua and England.

Actually,my wife is from Saint Miguel before moving to Canada at 2, but her parents have a home near Villa Franca, The place has changed a lot over the past 20 years but is still a gem.

Ryan Air and Sata offer cheap flights to Lisbon and London and Barcelona so we do get off the island if we need to but we love the tranquility and abundant fresh fish IMG_20170922_170859.jpg IMG_20170918_214820.jpg

hi and thanks very much for the concern....we're all ok here now but the ground is pretty charcoaled. I've been absent cuz the mods banned me for a few weeks because I quoted their constitution - freedom of speech - and it didn't sit well with them since I mentioned something that they didn't want to hear.

Not sure about doing the TET right now but I read a book about 20 years ago here about the Templars ('The Holy Blood and Holy Grail' and yes I know the book's theories are mostly makes-uppy!) and saw that the Templars had been here in PT in Tomar and Elvas etc. and I thought at the time, hmmm, maybe I will go see their leftover castles and temples and all that one day. Then a few days ago there was a TV programme on here and it was again about them and showing some of the leftover buildings and castles dotted about in mostly the Alentejo/upper Alentejo area. Impressive stuff. So then I thought again 'Hmmm... really must go and see some of that one day.'

I see you're relatively nearby all this in Obidos so you've maybe already seen and done it all already.

I was looking online a while back at this small middle-of-nowhere-but-looks-good camping place http://www.campingrosario.com, gave them a ring and they are friendly enough sounding and alright with a few bikes cluttering up the place so I was vaguely thinking to head there as a kinda base then explore above mentioned Templar stuff for some days, or longer or shorter or whatever. Not sure when I will head up that way, but maybe in the next few days/in the next week or so, I'm still kind of playing with the idea plus if I'm going to start doing rock strewn hill climbs up to castle ruins on my 1290 I'm maybe going to need a different rear tyre.

So I'm one person who's around, or may well be around pretty shortly. :ricky

EDIT: Apparently some friends of friends have a place in Avis that might be empty at the mo, so might base myself there if I can swing it. Will find out later/tomorrow.

I have a few books on that very subject ! But haven’t found the time to do a lot about seeing the templer trails through Spain and Portugal. But I do know Obidos and have been to Almorol. It’s a fascinating subject and great excuse to go exploring.
Riding on/off road the length of Portugal has been a must do for last 10 years and something I’m building up to. Like you, I have a fantastic machine but it needs preparing better for any serious of road, but more than that I need preparing so my plan was only to tackle the un paved roads and see how I get on.
Camping isn’t an option for me just yet as I need to buy a tent etc but most camp sites have cabins also here in Portugal so that’ll do me. A restaurant and a bar near by would make it perfect.
I can certainly escape hope for a couple of days so if you fancy meeting somewhere give me a shout. Like wise I’ll dig those books out and figure out a route around the alentejo taking in some history

Regarding this subject, it's something I've been reading and "studying" for some years. Tomar and Almourol are surely the crown jewels here in Portugal but a lot more castles and possessions around the country... just a matter of exploring! :evil:evil

There will be far better guides I'm sure! 'm just a History buff... that being said, it's a question of scheduling a cultural-gastronomy ride ;)

@bingbong @fulviapaulo I think I might have discovered the perfect exploring excuse - "It's cultural!". :getiton

I'm up for it but first I do need tyres, which hopefully I can get on Monday or Tuesday, as my front is also a bit worse for wear (TKC80) otherwise by the time I get there and then do some 'cultural and gastronomic touring' I'd be riding back on my rims.

So will post here again once new tyres are on and bike is pointed north. :thumb

Sounds like my gastronomy level of expertise too. :)

Having said that, I don't have tyres yet but I see also that the forecast is for frequent heavy storms between Wednesday and Saturday so wondering if rain might stop play this week. Keeping an eye on that (ironic that it doesn't rain for six months then maybe decides to do it all at once this week of all weeks!). :dirtdog

I know I saw the forecast too and had a 10 minute monk on. But after Monday it’s supposed to improving. Good luck finding some tyres, I think I’m going to try and find some tkc’s or Michelin’s.
