Last weekend I rode with a purpose. I had heard of the last operational gravity feed gas pumps in BC and I was on a mission to find them. I found them at the Trout Lake General Store on Hwy 31. (Note, Hwy 31 is gravel for about 30 km north of the store and 65 km south.)
Yup, they have two of them.
The store was open and they also have a BC Liquor Agency Store on the premises.
They are 102 Years Old and still in operation. I was debating asking the lady in the store for a mere 4 litres of fuel (as that was all I would have been able to squeeze into the tank) just so I could see them operate, but as I debated a car pulled up to the pump.
I got a demonstration of the pump in action. Above - pumping the fuel into the reservoir with a 3 foot long handle.
Gravity does the rest.
One more photo to prove the bike was there. I regret not taking the time to pull the bike up to the pump and fill up the tank. I would have loved a photo of the process. I now have an excellent excuse to go back.
