r1100gs adventure setup

    Hi all,

    Starting to plan the setup of my recently aquired r1100gs. It is currently very standard, with factory panniers, top box, suspension and plastic cylinder cover protectors. Intended riding will be lots of bitumen and loose WA gravel (aka ball bearings) with the occasional rougher adventure.


    This is a list of my planned accessory purchases. I would really appreciate any suggestion you might have.:ear
    • Pannier frames. Probably Hepco Becker, to suit the MTD aluminium 40L boxes I already have. Wanted the SW-Motech ones, but they dont think my boxes will fit. Mind you, it can't be hard to make them fit, surely.
    • Crash bars. Am leaning towards SW Motech, as the horizontal bar is high than the HB version, so maybe less likely to keep rolling onto the tank? Any feedback on real drop/crash experience?
    • Am led to believe that the tank protector bar is probably not required. Don't want to add weight if not needed.
    • TT sidestand plate. Or make my own.
    • TT headlight cover
    • Barkbuster handguards (already on order locally).
    • Suspension is fine one-up no luggage, but had to crank the rear preload right up to achieve 70mm sag. Don't want to spend big $$$ on Ohlins at this stage, perhaps a rear spring replacemnt will do? Big trips will be solo with up to 60kg of camping gear.
    Have I missed anything important? I'm a slow steady rider off road, wont be going over jumps or anything.

    the first thing i would do is buy good shocks front and rear,before anything else,and then a good seat.

    That means a crapload of cash. Usually about a third of the vehicle's (r1100gs) net worth. And they add no resale value.

    Shocks are indeed a bike-changer, but you needn't go Ohlins or other expensive brands. Most any rebuildable shock is fine.

    Engine bars, lateral supports, a tube of Aluminum-friendly & heat resistant instant e-poxy and a tyre spray are more important than suspensions.

    re-inforcement for the gearbox/rear sub-frame mounts,amazingly easy to break the gearbox.You might also want to add some kind of steering stop to the front wishbone as the ones on the frame are just aluminium lugs that snap easily.Touratech make these but at outrageous cost,make them yourself or get one of your mates to do it for some beer Cheers Chris sorry just realised that you are lucky enough to be in Australia,BMW addressed the gearbox subframe issue in your country with a kit they unfortunately would not sell to the rest of us.Have the BMW OZ part numbers written down if you need them

    I'm currently going through the same process (in Australia). My 1100 was a Jap import hence no rear sub-frame supports. I found touratech crashbars, rear sub-frame supports & steering stopper from a wreckers. $60 of sandblasting & powder coating & they look brand new again! The crash bars go on this weekend, hoepfully the protection is sufficient .

    Didn't really want to spend the $$ for reasons mentioned already, but the current shocks were bottomign out round town :eek1 so I ended up splurging on suspension. I'll be riding 2-up loaded with luggage so I figure it won't be fun unless I do something.

    I'm also checking any/all rubber seals, fuel lines, brake lines etc. Mine is a low km but 15yr old bike & some of the rubber is definitely perished. I've got braided brake lines to go on & will replace the pads while I'm at it.
    I'll probably also get an alternator belt, clutch & throttle cables to carry as spares. Will be carrying tyre repair stuff also obviously.

    :earI don't suppose anyone has pictures of the gearbox/subframe reinforcements please? Not sure if mine has these or not.

    If I am seeing them right, the TT steering stops simply put rubber between the forks and the telelever sides. Any reason why I can't jsut wrap thick rubber around the forks at the same height?

    see the yellow metal tabs that show up and to the left of the muffler? that is the left side. The right side looks very similar. You can also get them in the same color as the footpeg mounts. :deal

    what the man has on the bike in the picture(looks cool by the way)are the Touratech "hard parts",in Australia because so many people were actually using the bike for what it was designed to do rather than posing on their way to the shops BMW had to admit there was a problem with the mounts,as such BMW OZ produced a reinforcement kit.I am sorry when I was in OZ all I could afford was an XR600 and as such I do not know if it was an optional extra or a recall item.One of the Australian inmates will know.I have the numbers for the parts written down,unfortunately its unlikely they will ever let me back into your country unless I somehow become a Nobel prize winning neurosurgeon(6 month holiday visa some how turned into 17:1drink,great time)On the subject of the steering stop mod its not rocket science,you are right to think that perhaps 2 of those things to stop doors hitting the wall cut down a bit would would do the job.She ll be alright mate:D Cheers Chris

    Cool, I already have those. Will think more about some home made steering stops tonight.
    Made my own ali sidestand foot last night. Initially did not take clearance with the centrestand into account :huhit ended up a bit smaller than first planned. Turned out ok, will need to find some soft sand now....:D

    Made up some rubber strips and cable tied them to the back of the forks this afternoon, as a cheap steering stop. Seems to work ok, will refine it a bit more and then post pics. Has to be long enough to work within the travel of the front suspension. I realise that adding unsprung weight is not ideal, but this is so much cheaper than the TT hardpart.

    :earAny thoughts on HB vs TT panier frames? I think the TT frames are thicker at 18mm, so am leaning towards them at this stage. My existing ali panniers are both 45L, so I suppose I will need to get one 36L for the LH side, to make it look balanced.

    The BMW parts fiche lists reinforcement brackets, parts # 46512325860 and 46512325946, so the question is: are these the same as the Touratech aftermarket items that are no longer in catalog?:ear

    You might want to look at a muffler relocating kit (or make your own). Just changes the angle of the muffler so it is more or less level w/ the ground giving you room for a full size pannier above. Cheaper than a new pannier and a bit more room too.

    You cannot relocate the muffler on an 1100. The cat & muffler are one piece. If you want to use a full-size bag on the left you need to replace the stock GS pipe with one from a RS or RT or go aftermarket. BTDT!

    Not so at all! I'd gladly spend an extra $500-1000 to get a used bike with Ohlins front & rear compared to one with stock shocks. I'm not alone either!

    The difference between a bike with stock shocks and one with Ohlins has to be felt to be believed.

    Used Ohlins, especially for older BMWs can be found for sale all the time. Just plan to spend an extra $200 or so to have them rebuilt when you decide to go used.

    +1 on the rear shock,the standard rear even in good condition loses damping very quickly even in the extremely hot days of a Scottish summer (both days),sometimes it even reaches 30 degrees c:eek1.I ve got an Ohlihns on the front but to be honest the stock Showa (if in good condition) works just as well.Have you tried riding around standing for some time yet?Get the ergonomics right,maybe bar risers?Little more height in the seat?,just by making spacers up to go under the catches you can lift the seat just over an inch/26mm and the seat lock will work without modification.In America they make nice foot pegs called Pivot Pegz,too expensive for me unfortunately,think mountain bicycle pedals ,work just as well with a bit of thought:evil.Dropping the bike in 45 degrees C without at least a sealed battery will lose your electrolyte eventually,not good,you will not bump start it offroad even with a tow.

    the stock headlamp is abysmal.Think CBR 400 twin lamps (1150 is even worse!)Perhaps worth thinking about doing the external fuel filter modification?Still confused as to why they painted the inside of the metal tanks,at least if it is outside and blocks you can blow it out!Dont want to grind to a halt in WoopWoop cause of a blocked filter.Dont bother with a K+N air filter,fine if you are riding in Europe/USA but I have read a lo were the OZ inmates recommend I think HIFLO?,anyway its made in Australia and seems to be better at dealing with the fine red stuff that ends up in the airbox.Perhaps an oilcooler guard,piece of mesh from the store.One last thing,if you cross water stick some cheap plastic tubing onto the breather on top of the final drive unit and run it up as high as the air box otherwise it will draw in h2o emulsify the oil and self destruct at exactly the wrong moment Enjoy!!
