Over 100K miles on my Tenere so I've been thru some tires. And I have some time so here goes...

804/805 Shinkos are my goto tire combo. I easily get 5-6K from a rear tire and change the front after the 2nd rear. They handle pavement like any other road-going tire and are good in the wet, for a knobby tire. Offroad, the lugs are not very deep so sticky mud should be avoided. Lug spacing doesn't help lateral stability but for my riding conditions (coastal sand to mountains), traction is never an issue.

Of the streety tires I've tried (Bridgestone, Anakee II & 3, K-60, 705 and the Scorpion Trail 2), the Pirelli would be my choice. I changed that set out with 7K on the clock and more to spare. Front looked good and could have been a 10-12K mile tire. None of the weird, wear issues that I have seen from other reports. Handling was excellent, even in the wet and could roll down a dirt road, no problem. A dry dirt road, any wetness will be it's weakness.

Tires in the 19/17" combo are seeing new development so choices, which are good now, will only get better.

Someone mentioned Road Pilots for a 100% road tire, but I don't know if you'll find a 19 incher for the front? When I had my KTM 990 Adv. I ran a set of Continental Trail Attacks. To me they looked like a street only tire and performed great on the street, both wet and dry and they did OK on dirt roads. Not as good on dirt roads as the Pirellis the bike came with but they seemed more planted on pavement. As usual the front did not seem to wear at all, the rear went about 8K miles if I remember correctly. As for the stock Bridgestones, I had no real complaints with them on my '14 S10 on the street. Very grippy tire in the wet or dry. I had no problems dragging footpegs with them and the front would not wear out.

An update on the Avon Trekriders, I think I may have lost my wheel weights while off roading today because there was a lot more vibration than when I started.

Also, I am running a pound or so more than stock pressure and the tires are a bit skittish in the gravel and rocky conditions we were in. Didn't seem to be any better off road than stock. The front actually gave me less confidence than stock.

I will drop pressures a little and see what happens. These have a very round profile so I think they are not catching enough contact patch on the dirt and causing a lack of confidence around corners that I didn't experience with stock.

Banged into some big rocks today and the wheels still seems straight and my forks aren't leaking.

Also, I stiffened the suspension per the S10 forum and I think it may be too stiff as I am skipping off of the rocks instead of absorbing the hits. Could be affecting the tire feel.

With stock tires I don't remember the same feeling after suspension adjust.

Edit: Wheel weights still intact. Going to have to check and see if the front rim is bent.

Hope you get it figured out! I have been looking at these and was thinking they might be my next tire. From your experience so far they don't sound very confidence inspiring. Thanks for doing a write up and keep us posted on your results! Hoping your rim is not bent and it is something minor. I think I may have to order Mitas E07's until these get more seat time from people. Thanks again!

Any opinions out there on E07 vs E07 Dakars? Part of me likes the idea of more compliance (traction?) of the non-Dakar. Difference in tire life?

Agreed. With all of the tires that the Super Tenere does not like on the front, this may be another.

This tire is also loud compared to stock.

Good thing though is my speedo is right on.

Everything I have read points to the Dakar version for our heavier bikes.

Not a huge difference in traction but life doubles.

Thanks! I still have a little life left in the tires I have now but if I go that route Dakars are what I was thinking. Looking forward to more feedback on the Avons also.

Street so far has been decent with the Avons. A little less traction than stock but it is a more dirt biased tire. I really should air down and go kick some more dirt around.

Dakars will not give you a longer life (in my experience)

all in Kilometers Below, over the life of ST ownership.
    riding is roughly 60/40 road/dirt.
Great in the wet, great in gravel, trails etc..decent in moderate mud. Not as noisy as a K60, or a knobby, but louder than a street tire (obvs!)

Dakar is 4 ply vs 3 ply. It will save your rims from dings and dents, if you air down. I don't air down, as I dented my rims four times. Tire life was identical for me.

On my second set of OEM Bridgestone Battlewings. In between I tried a Bridgestone A40 rear and a set of Anakee IIIs. The A40 paired with a half worn battlewing front was OK, but I don't think the profiles or construction or something were a good match as handling felt a bit vague. I got 19k miles from the OEM front battlewing and it wasn't bald but showed some strange wear patterns. I got about 10K from the original rear battlewing and about 9K on the rear A40 before I took it off to install a matched set of Michelins. It had a little life left so I've kept as a spare.

The A IIIs went on at 19K and lasted until 32K so went 13K. The front was gone but the rear looked like it had 2-3K left in it. All 3 rear tires (BW, A40 & A III) wore pretty flat in profile. I don't think any of them are dual compound and this riding was 90% street.

I found a good deal on some brand new OEM take-off BWs, and am running those again now, mileage so far is at about 40K (so aout 8K total). Again the rear is flattening out and again 90% street.

I am going to try the Shinko 705s next I think.

I have to admit I am a bit of a fan of the stock tires so far. I use it for a daily rider and touring with very little off road, just a bit of gravel. They are cheap and grab very well as you can put it down in the curves to the pegs with confidence. Most riders seem to be reporting good mileage with them as well. When I do wear them out I haven't decided on staying with them or going to a set of Tourance Next.

Hope you all don’t mind a GS interloper but I wanted to comment on some of the issues users of the 804/805 were having.

These tires have a max pressure of only 33psi. My experience has been if you’re aired up to radial tire pressures they will feel skittish. I’m running 29 front and 30 rear and will air down to the mid teens when in the looser stuff.

If you’ve experienced this loose feeling then double check those pressures.

    Everyone ride safe!

Mitas has stopped offering the "Dakar" version in any tire. If your buying old stock (what most us dealers have on hand) the Dakar is probably the way to go. Just make sure the load rating is sufficient, no matter what tire you go with. That being said if you intend to go off the beaten path, put something else on the front like a e10 or shinko 804. The e07 front would be best paired with a 90/10 rear

Are you sure? Their website still shows both versions. Maybe you are looking at the new E-07+ which is not offered in a Dakar?

My annual shipment is sitting at the Post Office now. I'll post back the mfg date codes after delivery on Monday.

2018's supply of rubber received today.
Tires were manufactured in WW 41 of 2017. Shipped to me WW 4 of 2018 so not even 4 months old. If being discontinued I would expect much older stock in the pipeline.[IMG]

I was just on their site looking at it. It is a new tire, the surprise for me is they are V rated in the sizes for our tire size. High silica content for wet weather traction and they carry the M&S designation. They don't say what the target group is but I am going to make a guess at 60% road and 40% trail.

I found a thread on these tires here on this site.

I barely got 2k out of a Shinko but it depends on riding style, I guess. I got 3545 out of the older e09 in the pic I posted. Maybe coulda gone longer on pavement but it was useless in the muck. I am hard on rear tires. They are a consumable that is directly related to my enjoyment on the bike so I am OK with buying a few extra each year.

From Trikepilot and Fancy, sorta sums up ,my feelings. Except I’m not as hard on them as he is so I get a bit more mileage out of mine.
