    Thanks for the tips! YES!! The Ohlins does have a ride height adjuster.
    I wondered what about the two nuts at the bottom of the shock and turned them and to my delight I found it was a height adjustment! :clap

    So all is well. The DR650 the shock came off of was set up for a short woman rider who was super moto'ing the bike. So I believe the Ohlins was set up for a short rider from the outset.

    Now I'm testing the new set up to dial in compression, rebound and
    pre-load/sag. One thing is clear right off the bat .... the rebound circuit is far superior to the stock KYB item. Compression is just a bit harsh now but I'm thinking I can dial some of that out.

    Great deal! Congrats! Take your time breaking in the bike!

    Here is my Break-in method:

    Heat Cycles:
    Take a few normal 20 minute rides, varying speed and RPM's. Let the bike cool down for 20 minutes between each ride. After four or five heat cycles, I would begin to ride the bike fairly hard for the next 200 miles or so, letting it cool between hard runs of a half hour or so.

    Take it up near Redline, then snap the throttle shut, letting the bike slow way down. This On/Off throttle action will break it in properly, seating rings fully in a couple hundred miles. I would change oil (use normal mineral oil) at about 400 or 500 miles) This will get out all the small particles from the break in. After 400 miles the bike is broken in.

    You should do fairly aggressive acceleration during this initial period but only after the bike is fully warmed. Never work it hard on a cold motor. Use ONLY mineral oil, not synthetic or semi-synthetic until two thousand miles. Then you can switch to Full Synthetic if you like. Good to go.

    Wind Noise:
    I actually find the stock DR very quiet (and smooth) on the road at 65 to 70 mph. The key here is:
    1. Earplugs 2. Quality Helmet that is Quiet.

    Without ear plugs you will be partially deaf in a year. (not a joke)
    I do not know of one experienced rider who does not use plugs. You will ride calmer and be less fatigued and relaxed at your destination.

    Some fit a shield to the DR. In super wet, cold climes you could go this route but most shields end up making a lot of wind noise. The stock set up is the quietest set up I've found. (YMMV)

    The "Flat Foot" Myth:
    You simply DO NOT need to have both feet flat on the ground to properly control a bike. This is a HD cruiser based myth and is crap.
    Can you balance a bicycle? Well then, you can balance a DR.

    The amount the DR stock adjustment allows you to lower should be fine and does not compromise handling or performance too much, so you're fine with that but I would not go any lower unless you are 5 ft. tall or under.

    Get used to the balance of the bike. Practice riding tight figure eights and doing quick direction changes. The balls of your feet are fine to
    balance on. Learn to scoot over onto one butt cheeck at a stop, putting one foot on the rear brake (to hold on a hill) and the other on
    the ground. I live in San Fran, so we have a few hills here. :D

    If you are a new rider do take a MSF course and please please please go out and practice panic braking and swerving to avoid and such.

    PS: A Corbin seat is about a thousand times more effective than any Gel seat. Gel seat is useless, IMO. But I've got a Corbin!

    Remove the clutch cover (remember to drain oil first!)<o:p></o:p>
    Remove the clutch basket assembly using a 27mm socket<o:p></o:p>
    Remove the breather plate<o:p></o:p>
    Remove the two NSU fasteners and move NSU aside<o:p></o:p>
    Using upgraded fastener*, liberally apply low-strength loctite and thread in fully and withdraw<o:p></o:p>
    Put NSU in place, re-apply loctite, and tighten down with upgraded fasteners
    (The normal fasteners are 5mm x 16mm screws (0.8 pitch). Replace them with 5mm x 20mm hex head bolts to engage a few more threads) and 5mm serrated lock washers<o:p></o:p>

    Replace the breather plate using upgraded flange fasteners properly torqued and loctited<o:p></o:p>
    Replace the clutch assembly after measuring your plates for possible replacement<o:p></o:p>
    Re-install engine oil and go riding<o:p></o:p>

    I am gonna give the DR a thorough going over this winter , and the carb is an issue that I am not educated in.How do I determine what jets I should run??? Thanks in advance.

    it looks like I can take my cam chain tighten off by just pulling the two bolts .Haven't screwed with this at all and I need to make a gasket for it its leaking oil right now .Just want to confirm i can pull this out and put it back together without screwing anything up up top don't plan on turning engine over or anything while it is out just want to stop the leak. thanks for any input

    Yes. It is spring loaded - and will unwind as you extract it .. best to loosen the nut on the back of the device so you don't have to hold it in a vice off the motor.. You'll want to acess teh back so you can restrain the spring before you reinstall it .. instructions for that are in the manual.. pdf on the web ..

    Bit of RTV/silastic should sort the leak.

    When I met my wife I had my 97 DR650 and a brand new (picked it up the day before I met her!) '99 ZRX1100. Then I "needed" a track bike so I bought a new 2006 ZX6R. Then, since she didn't like riding on the back of the ZRX, I bought a 2006 V-Strom 1000. She thought, apparently, that it was a "replacement" for the ZRX. I said "Well no, that REX has sentimental value - bought it the day before I met you, Sweetie!" She wasn't buying - says I have BAD (Bike Aquisition Disorder), and I have it bad. But, really, I only need one more bike....or maybe two....

    I guess ear plugs are good to use, but after 20 years, I've
    never used ear plugs, maybe I have had quiet helmets.

    I have never used earplugs either. Maybe it depends on what kind of helmet you wear.

    I bought a new DR650 and about 3 weeks later bought a used DR200 to teach my daughter how to ride, but I like it too. I plan to keep both.

    The DR650 is my primary mover, too much power to leave it alone for long. I also have a tw200 that I bought to teach the mrs to ride with. She loves her TW, but I get more use out of it than she does. It works well for it's size, which is why I plan to keep both the DR650 and the TW200. Both have their roles in our house, can't see the garage loosing either one.

    I never wore earplugs, till I got my DR650. All my bikes were enduro bikes that only saw short trips, (usually less than 5 miles) on tar before jumping back on the trails. Now that I ride a truly street legal bike that is comfortable going longer distances on tar I use earplugs. I'm sure it's a function not necessary with a good street helmet, but I still wear my HJC CLX and the wind noise is deafening.

    If I even try riding on the hiway or in town or trail riding with out ear plugs the noise is so bad from wind and chain and exhaust noise it is painful, after riding with earplugs for the last ten years,quiet helmet or not your ears will thank you for wearing plugs.

    29.00 for heated grips from dual star,they are really warm and way cheaper then big bulky gloves.I run mine on low lots of the time as they make a lot of heat.Good wind breaker handgaurds are also the bomb in cold weather.

    I have heated grips on the DR and the V-Strom, and with the hand guards they are good down to, well I think 10 degrees is as cold as I've done. 20 degrees for about six hours (until the sun came up) and the hands were just fine (toes were a little cold). On the Rex, I don't have heated grips and wear Widder electric vest, arm chaps and gloves. I don't think they are as warm as the heated grips/hand guards.

    It amazes me that people buy these bikes new and don't ride them and then sell them at a huge loss. I bought mine in July off of Craigslist the same way. I got a 2006 with 74 miles, a new helmet and a two year extended warranty for $3,700.

    These bikes are way too much fun to let them sit. Enjoy your new ride!
