Group get-togethers are one of the things that drew me to ADV years ago. This site isn't JUST about dirtbikes; it's about people. We used to have several annual camp outs, where everyone would gather around a fire at night, share food and drink, tell stories, make new friends and renew old friendships. Then we'd get up in the morning and ride. Many were free, some paid, but all wonderful. A select few, like FMF, were destroyed by their own popularity. If you'd just like to talk about or post pictures from group get-togethers, please do so now.
My beef tonight is specify about The Elephant Ride, that annual sojourn toward the peak of Guanella Pass. I loaded my bike tonight with firewood, beer and a motorcycle, then drove up Grant looking for my peeps. No one was there. Three years ago, and for many years prior, we had 20 or more at the camp out. Last year's it was three. This began when they paved Guanell. People started to complain that it "took all of the fun about it." The fun's still there. It's just waiting for merry-makers. Come be merry. Let's commit to getting together in 2017.

You know if I'm there, I'll be there. This NM gig is wearing on me.

Paving Guanella took all the fun out of riding it. It was a close to town pass that had great scenery and Georgetown had great food at the start. I liked to try my gravel skills on the road which looked great in the foreground of mountain pics such as Bierstadt, but no more. Still a couple of good camp sites though.

IMO, the fun ended when they started gating the road in the winter. With sporadic maintenance and no gates, it was a difficult, yet possible challenge to make it to Georgetown.

Never mind the pavement, it was much more fun before it was gated and there was sporadic plowing in the winter. The odds were usually good that you could make it over to Georgetown for lunch.

The Elephant Ride aside, let's talk about real ADV get-togethers. I know that "organized" events have to have insurance and waivers and all kinds of ridiculous things created by our modern society. But I've still got hopes for an "unorganized-ish" camping ride or two every year. Drop a pin on a map and calendar, no fee, no host, show up if you can. If love to attend, and I'd help set the date, but I won't drag everyone kicking and screaming to it, if group gatherings are no longer of interest.

I am going to do something like that next fall in the Sand wash OHV area west of Maybell. I know it is a long way for some of you, but it will be more of a smaller dual sport/dirt bike weekend. camp, eat ride tell stories etc... You bring everything need and lets have fun.

That would be great! (Unsanctioned rides)

As a noob I was looking forward to attending rides. I have 9 individual whole weeks off this summer and spring.

I went through the rally thread to see what I could do. I'm working during every single event on the calendar in the western US...bad luck.

As for the elephant...I was yet again working. I also figured I needed studded tires, which I don't have.

Maybell city park is a really nice spot to park , priced right , good showers and bathroom and fair shade just don't camp on the really nice grass , it rains twice a night . I'll be there for a couple weeks in late July . Rode two weeks from there last year and loved it . Street or dirt plenty of miles and no traffic .

Yep, my backyard. Will probably camp at sandwash though. Save the 20 miles extra.

I am thinking of doing another Peach Valley get together this spring. We did that a few years ago and it was awesome! The bad part was the Forest Service does monitor ADV and they started trying to say they would shut us down. It might have been because Ben, who had Dubinky clothing at the time, and Morgan from Highland Cycles both said they would bring some beer. I don't know. I left messages with the local Forest Service mgr, but never heard back. It wasn't sponsored, everyone shared food, etc. We had 10-15 people over the course of the weekend come and go, and we had a blast! Early morning ditch sessions, day rides up on the more technical singletrack, late night ditch runs. Very enjoyable, but I didn't like the heat from the forest service just for seeing if people from elsewhere wanted to meet up for a weekend to ride somewhere new.

Agreed that the forest service has ruined several of the lets just get together, camp and ride outings. The rainbow family and the pot heads annual get together don't seem to draw any flak but throw a motorcycle in and OH NO we have a sponsored event and you can't do it. :lol3
