The prolems associated wih range limitations have been addressed many times, and in many fields of transportation.

WWII problem- limited flight time over Germany for escort fighters.

The immediate answer: fitting drop tanks.

Of course there was more to this issue than just that! A rear fusilarge mounted tank behind the CoG had to be drawn from early in flight and 34 - 40 gallons consumed prior to any but normal straight-ahead flight envolopes. Before that initial fuel consumption both this US-modified Spitfire and later P-51 Mustangs with similar long-range equiping had tail-heavy stability problems.
After that first fuel selection, the external drop tanks were usually the next fuel source - so that these could be 'dropped' to restore the fighter's clean lines for combat!

So, how does this long-range mod apply to the use of electric power?
Cross on over to the range issue for small 2-seat all-electric light aircraft. Cross-country flights can often end at an inconvenient location with limited options for getting to the nearest over-night accomodation near what may be a sparsely-equipped country airfield.

The solution to range limitations with an electric light aircraft in this case comesin the form of a
    RExLite Range Extender.

"RExLite manages to contain a 40 kilowatt (53.6 hp.) engine-generator in the 60 kilogram (132 pound – depending on fuel load) pod. This mod extends the range and endurance for small 2-seat all-electric aircraft to become comparable to conventional combustion engine types in cross-country flights with a single person onboard. For local area and circuit flying of 2-seat all-electric types with a passenger onboard, the extra endurance and redundancy will allow comparable flight times without anxiety about battery state of charge and recharging considerations.” For larger aircraft or even greater range, two pods could be mounted, possibly making the airplane look like a WWII fighter on a long-range escort mission."

Hybrid/Electric automobiles already employ different solutions to the range issue which often involves a small capacity fixed-speed IC motor. But some pure EVs address this range issue with an external answer (note- easy reversing is covered by this particular mod):

    Meth heads will steal that.

If a meth head was stupid enough to attempt to power saw through the locked coupling - he'd be more likely to sever the wrist of his other hand before he cut through the coupling.

Then he'd just look on in stunned wonder at his bloody stump while he bleed-out.

The power was out at work one morning. Some methhead tried to steal some (hot) power lines. He won't be doing that again.

If its worth something, someone will try to steal it. That thing unfortunately looks easy to steal.
