You didn't run into any showers?
Sprinkled the night into smith center, and a touch at the starting point, but not enough to get wet
I completely forgot about this I was planning on doing the run I might have to be like riggpigg and run it on my own anyway
I LOVE this report! The word "solstice" really caught my eye! I am fortunate to spend my summers in Northern Germany and we absolutely worship the summer solstice. It starts getting light about 3:00 am and dark about 11:00. Still, at midnight, the sky is a brilliant cobalt blue. I made one motorcycle trip to the Artic circle and another to the North Cape (Nordkapp) for the summer solstice and the midnight sun. This is Rostock, Germany at midnight on the summer solstice. Rostock is on the Baltic Sea.
SMACKDAB #3 will be SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2017.
Yes, we're still 7½ months out, but there's already some activity that should make this coming year's event a slightly grander affair! Rider magazine printed my letter about Smackdab, in which I mentioned the website address. It has triggered a healthy spike in traffic:
Also, I found a couple of new threads discussing the event on other web forums:
All this looks promising for a good turn out this year!
I didn't even realize there was a website. cool.
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR SMACKDAB 2017 IS NOW LIVE ON THE WEBSITE.
Online registration is optional — you can still simply show up and ride, just like always. There is no cost to participate in the Smackdab ride (the only cost is for the finisher’s patch, should you choose to buy one). Pre-registration will simply help us let the folks in Smith Center and Rugby know how many riders they should expect to participate, and provides the organizers a way to contact individual riders if needed. Please only sign up if there's a good chance you'll ride.
Sign up anytime before Memorial Day (Monday, May 29, 2017) to get your finisher’s patch half off. Patches cost us more than $10 each to have embroidered; the cost is generously subsidized by the Smith County Chamber of Commerce.
Tan, Im in, Im trying to register, can't get the captcha to work???? I will make this year I hope...never did get it done last year.
I tried it several times to test it. If it is too troublesome I can turn it off. I'll just get a flood of spam then, though.
We now have about 65 riders signed up for this year's Smackdab ride. Things seem to have grown beyond ADVRider, so I would encourage anybody interested to visit the Smackdab Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/smackdab281/
ADDITIONAL CAMPING OPTIONS
There are currently 88 riders signed up for this year's run, and the communities at the start and end of the ride are taking special steps to welcome Smackdab’ers to their towns.
On June 13, 2017, the Lebanon, KS City Council agreed to allow Smackdab’ers to camp for free in their city park Friday night. There are restrooms, but no showers. The town of Lebanon is only about 2-1/2 miles from the start point, rather than the 16+ miles from Smith Center, so it’s a very convenient location. A big thanks to Lebanon for their hospitality!
After the ride, the Rugby Chamber of Commerce are opening the Pierce County fairgrounds, just around the corner from the monument, for overnight tent camping on Saturday night. The grounds have free hot showers available for the Smackdab riders. This campground gets high reviews from the RV community. Thanks to Smackdab participant Michael Studer for initiating this request, and a big thank-you to the kind folks in Rugby.
We had 87 people participate in this year's Smackdab run, with all but one finishing (charging system failure).
The people of Smith County really rolled out the red carpet for us this year!
***ALSO, I have posted an all-time finishers' roll on the Smackdab website. Those of you who participated in 2015 & 2016 should check that you are represented there, and verify that I have your information correct.
Sounds like a lot of fun and what a great idea... just adding this... if you ever wanted to extend your adventure and travel a little north and west of Rugby at that time of year, there is a place north of Bottineau called Mystic Horizons, also known as the "stonehenge of the prairies". It's on top of the Turtle Mts. There is an overlook plus a viewing portal in stone monuments that has the sun lining up perfectly with the solstices... you can google it, it's pretty cool. Anyway, glad I found your report..nice reading..
How did I not know about Mystic Horizons?
Thanks for the info!
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR SMACKDAB 2018 IS NOW LIVE ON THE WEBSITE.
The Fourth Annual Smackdab Summer Solstice Run will be held on Saturday, June 23, this year.
Online registration is still optional, but registering AT THE SMACKDAB WEBSITE (not just replying to this thread) prior to Memorial Day gets you your finisher’s patch for half price.
I just added lots of pictures from last year's run. I will be updating the riders instructions very soon, to accommodate some suggested changes from last year's participants. (An alternate validation scheme is in the works for those who don't want to meet at the monument in Rugby at dusk.)
Since some Smackdab veterans are planning another run (my wife and I were the first repeat finishers last year), I will be making up these embroidered tabs this year.
The past couple of years, a small number of participants have asked me how they can be counted as a finisher without being present at the sundown meet-up in Rugby. While I firmly believe that the camaraderie of starting and finishing the ride as a group is an integral part of the Smackdab experience, I understand that some folks simply can’t hang around and spend the night in Rugby. Therefore, for 2018 a new alternative validation method is available for those who cannot be at monument when the sun sets.
Refer to the Smackdab website for full details: http://smackdab281.org/the-ride#finishing
Thanks for the alternate finishing method. I guess I kind of set the prescedent the first year, eh?
I think this will work smoother than "put a note under a rock at the base of the monument."
A press release about this year's Smackdab is available as a PDF file, and in the news archive of the website. Please feel free to distribute.
