The summer of stupid and obnoxious around here it seems. And it seems worse than normal.

The number of sport bikes running straight pipes or megaphones is horrible right now. And of course the bike has to be kept at 6k, with constant throttle lunges. Bwahh, ak,ak,ak! Bwahh, bwahh, waaaahhhhh!

Loud pipes save lives has seemingly become the mantra of the kids on rice grinders. Especially sport or naked types.

Lane splitting has become a thing, but not in a good way. Fast and stupid is the rule now.
Shoulder passes, tailgating lane sharing, etc. Of course with the loud pipes.

The herds have grown too. 20 or so poorly tuned screaming crotch rockets blasting through is god awful.

It’s becoming a Mad Max distopea around here. I understand why people start stringing up cables neck high.

Just grousing. Damn though . There’s always some. But this year seems especially heavy.

I think he has valid points. It seems like a switch has been toggled and for some reason courteous or even reasonable roadway behavior has been tossed out the window. Yesterday I was driving into a construction area on an Interstate highway where several interchanges occur within just a few miles, often requiring drivers to switch lanes. The posted limit was 45 which I think is low and most drivers were doing about 55 to 60, and that's what I was doing. Suddenly, in my driver side mirror I saw a car approaching from my rear, closing in at an additional (guessing) 30 mph! The guy was straddling the white line separating lanes and was on course to run into my left rear corner. I went to my right as far as I could in my lane as other traffic was next to me. I'm not sure how he, others and I were so lucky, but he squeezed between me and a car to my left and continued to pull a similar stunt with other traffic as far ahead of me as I could keep up with him (visually). Sorry, as I'm not a guy who calls people in, but that's what I did. My passenger made the 911 call with my phone. I hope they caught the guy because sooner or later, he's going to kill someone or at least cause an accident.

Fuck this crap folks. Something is enabling assholes to display their worst.

Truth right there, almost got took out by a Prius this morning. Dude was playing on his phone in construction traffic, riding the tractor-trailer in front of him ass and decided that he wanted my spot in the lane next to him. FKN prick.

    Summer of Stupid is right!
Twice yesterday on three lane wide road each way, a big pickup (Bro Dozers) made a fast right turn from the far left lane in heavy traffic. Everyone was able to avoid these morons. Both times they did it so quick there wasn't time to honk, just brake and swerve. I think the heat is making people stupider and angrier!

Like twitter, everyone wants to be heard, now more than ever.

I find the 600cc sport bikes cruising around town in 1st or 2nd gear screaming at 10,000 rpm just as obnoxious as the loud pipe hardly riders.

I don't get the loud pipe thing.

Or I do, because I was young and dumb once. (Old and less dumb now, I like to think.)

I'd love to see the cops start busting people for pipes. First offense is a few hundred dollar fix it, second offense the bike gets towed and plates revoked until it's fixed.

    Third offense: :grim

This. And the rampant righteous indignation everyone has about everything they don't agree with. With a side course of no tolerance for anyone that thinks, looks, or acts in any way differently than me.

Mix it all together with a splash of impatience a dash of melodrama, and a tablespoon of frustration and you have the recipe for road rage on a grand scale.

Cell phone culture doesn't help. When you have two oblivious nitwits driving next to each other at 5 mph under for miles at a time people are eventually going to try to get around them.

You’re kind to think of them as “oblivious”. I have a hard time not seeing it simply as belligerent self-centeredness. Imputed motive is gasoline on the fire... I’d probably be less irritated if I just thought of them as witless.

I have a 1600cc v-twin motor with straight pipes that run to the end of my rear tire. I love the way it sounds.

I don't feel like its obnoxiously loud so it makes me wonder if y'all are complaining about bikes louder than mine.

It might sound good to you because you're in front of the noise..........and it's yours. Sit on your porch and have your buddy run it past your house while hitting the limiter before each gear change to see how it sounds to everyone else!

For the most part the whiners on this board are like ex-smokers. Nobody complains more about someone smoking than someone who used to. Many of them had loud pipes when they were young. Some of them have aftermarket pipes now, but in their perception, that's ok. It's always "those other people who take it further than me". But there's also a lot of truth in the noise being a problem more than a solution.

About 20 years ago, when I first moved into the neighborhood I live in now, I commuted by bike. I was very conscious of how loud it was and tried to keep it down going down the street. But the bike was pretty loud even at idle. We had a block party one night the summer after I moved in, and I was talking to a little old lady down the street and she told me "I love hearing you leave on your bike, because to me it sounds like adventure and fun, and that makes me smile".

While I know that not everyone shares her opinion, I definitely think that the folks here blow it waaaaay out of proportion. For every loud Harley I hear go by on Friday or Saturday night I hear dozens of wanna be race cars and bro dozers go by. And the sport bikes are even rarer. I would appreciate them slowing down, using a higher gear and being more considerate, but the bottom line is that's just life in the big city. It's noisy. Trucks, sirens, loud parties, folks that shoot off fireworks for every single holiday there is, not to mention the neighbor with the three dogs that bark at everything.

Loud pipes are just a drop in the bucket.

And yes, my bike is sewing machine quiet now. I can hear the valve train rattle louder than the exhaust.

I don't mind loud pipes on the streets and highways, but I do mind loud pipes on the trails. Lots of people have loud resonators on their Fast & Furious street "racers". Loud pipes close trails, and it is a hard enough fight to keep them open. I bought a used off road bike and took the loud by legal FMF Power Core off and put the stock exhaust back on just to quite it down.

Its got nothing to do with the season. We're in the throes of winter here in Canberra (Aus) and we have similar issues. Seems the trend now is for all the middle-aged men to buy up stupidly loud and shiny Harleys of all sorts. Then they gather in packs of 5-20, all with shaved heads, skull embossed face scarves, singlets and short shorts and they all then proceed to ride as slowly and as loudly as possible through the suburbs down to the local cafe in a procession of shiny foreheads, overworked biceps and underworked calves.
Used to be there would be one or two around, and that was fine. But this last 12 months HD must have had a sale on, the numbers are insane.

    Yeah, relax a little. :lol3

I've been thinking the OP's scenario but with lifted trucks, bikes are fine except for the loud HD's. Those damn lifted trucks are everywhere, noisy & obnoxious. They are jacked up with mudder tires just to make a run to the stores. Up nort ya know.
