I bought the 3m promoter at NAPA, and cleaned the wheel prior with brake cleaner. Bone dry and not a speck of grease.

We used a quick (read:not a saturating scrub) wipe down of acetone inside my buddies wheel when doing the 3M job. Has held up great for the past couple years.

None, it's not needed, just clean it good. I used a scotch bright pad on a die grinder and some solvent, I probably used brake clean knowing how much I reach for that can.

I agree, I probably didn't need the adhesion promoter, but I figured I already bought it and have it here, so I may as well use it.

I only used a rag and some rubbing alcohol to prep my rim before applying the 3M tape. About 6500 miles with no problems. I did put the original rubber rim strip back in place over the tape when I put a new tire on at about 5500 mi. just to keep the tire from contacting the tape when I was installing/removing. Probably not necessary but it was a nice snug fit.

I put the rubber strip back in my rim on my 1st tire after going tubeless. The strip rotated and made it very difficult to check my tire pressure. I removed it when it was time for a new tire.

Time to report back. I did the 3M tape last winter and am losing air now. I'm pretty sure it's because I put the stem over the tape. I'd put a straight stem on and that was a big mistake anyhow and I'm ready for a new set of tires soon. When I put that stem in I'll cut the tape from around the stem so it can be clamped down tight to the rim. I didn't really have any issues until the bike sat thru the winter and then again a month or two later. Pretty sure it's from tightening the stem to the tape instead of the metal rim.

for what it is worth, I put the stem over the tape and used a straight stem. Been fine for 2 years and thousands of miles. You may want to check for other issues like rough spots or imperfections along the rim?

First look at my tape after 5000 miles. The tape looks great and it has really conformed to the inside of the rim due to the tire pressure. The only thing I would do differently next time is use some vinyl or aluminum stickers instead of paper. The air pressure caused some visible tearing of the stickers, but the 3M tape was fine. The doughnut I put over the valve stem was holding well, too.

Yep, that might have been the problem. It was a little loose. Taking a small trip this weekend and will report back if it helped. Thanks.

Or a set of Kineo wheels. Expensive but very bad ass looking especially with their custom options.

I have not had to adjust the spokes since installing the 3M tape, but the point of the stickers is to allow the spoke nipples to turn under the 3M tape when adjusting them. That is why I'd use something other than paper stickers next time to keep them from tearing.
