Ok so would it be fair to say at this point that what you did in the video may have been close to 105%
Nah.. I dont think so. I certainly wasnt going at anymore than 66.6%, and the S10 felt like it had a lot more left in it for the terrain... Not once through the whole day was I or the bike ragged or out of shape. Typically the video footage (even the raw footage which was very high quality) does not show the extent of the terrain, size of the bumps and lumps, degree of climb and decent and the amount of jaggy rocks that appeard from no where etc, and there was the occasional unexpected rock that could not be missed. Greg.
It says that either the suspension is very good (which it is) or the rims are made from black surf board foam (which I am pretty sure is not the case).. I did let the tyre pressures down to 20psi front and 22psi rear.. In hindsight I would probably try them at 26f / 30r for this terrain at this pace. On road I run these tyres at 37f / 40r so I dont think the damage would have been from curb / roundabout hopping on road. Greg.
A little birdy told me that early next week a batch of Alloy sump guards are due to arrive, hopefully enough to fill the back orders. Cheers Rick
Yeh,, Dunno, I certainly hope so. I have been led to believe that I should be getting everything except the heated grips by around the 25th??? Greg.
Yamaha needed a couple of units for their press bikes as it would have been embarassing to have the media hole a sump etc because they wern't fitted, so that has hurried up the importation. 1,700 k so the "Run in" period is finished, not that makes any difference. Cheers Rick
You know, I looked at the front rim when we where done expecting to see dents, but i couldn't see any. Didn't think to look at the rear. I told ya you were going too hard Seriously though, from what ive read and seen, if that was an F800gs/KTM640-950-990adv the front would have looked like a 50cent coin.........Go and have a look at the front of the F800GS you've got in the shed at the minute.Or better still ride it at between 10-25km :eek1
I may have skip in the earlier posts; I wonder, is there any information about the makes of the front and rear shocks? If I am not mistaken the rear shock of 660 Tenere is ZF and don't know about the front. Couldn't see in the Yamaha datasheets either.
i test rode this today and i was really impressed. Great engine and brakes, it is heavy but the weight is low so it is a kitten to ride at any speed. In comparison the the gs1200 Adventure i rode last week this is a much better fit for me. I'm keen on doing the APC rally next year so I just need to work out if this is suited to serious off road or should I be considering something else?
Yeah you really got to get the weight down to about the 90kg mark for that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zhb2lnS_4k&feature=fvw What type of bikes did it last time? If it is just typical desert stuff then you should be fine as as long as it hasn't been raining heavily. The bike carries it's weight well but if there is uphill pushing to do in ummm anything then it could be a pain. Cheers Graham
Trials stuff is pretty cool but not suited as it's pretty narrow focused. The tenere is a good choice as I'm looking for the following: At least 450 range, more is better Good service interval length with good Oil capacity Comfortable with excellent protection from the elements Robust enough to take some knocks Needs to be able to carry camping gear etc. Good charging system to run other gear. Must be multi cylinder, FI preferably Must be road registrable I'd like at least 100hp as it will be used as a road bike from time to time. I would love a kick start just in case but very few bikes seem to have this. I have ridden the 1200GSA, Super Tenere, KTM Adventure, KTM SMC. I am yet to try out the 990 Adventure R, the GS800 To date the Tenere is the best fit for me for what I have in mind. I have had 2 stroke & thumper trail bikes in the past and the idea of riding one for more a couple of hundred KM make me feel old :) I'm currently on a zx10r so my comfort expectations are not that high. Apologies for the thread hijack, all I really wanted to say was that the Super Tenere is a great bike, sure it is a bit fat but you don't feel it like you do on a GSA and it ticks most of the items above. Steve
The GSA is the pick there if you can afford it, if you can't, carry a can. KTM has big tanks available, nothing for s10 yet apart from 23L standard. S10, BMW, KTM (nothing to do with intervals though) ? All about the same, umm BMW, S10, KTM in that order. R1200RT if you are serious about that. KTM*, S10, BMW** (*until something falls off) (**until something breaks) BMW (aftermarket), KTM (aftermarket) S10 standard are a bit weak but will be fine if you don't drop it but tough stuff coming soon. Any of the big ones will do big payloads. Been working out lately? BMW GSA, S10 is unknown (to me) at the moment. S10, BMW, KTM. Yep All of them. Depends how they produce it. you takes your pick. If the S10 works for you, the only thing that is a problem RIGHT NOW is that the aftermarket boys haven't got their stuff out yet but that will be fixed in time so RIGHT NOW you have a choice of YAMAHA YAMAHA and YAMAHA and a bit of a wait. The only thing that I personally would be waiting for (or fabricating) are brackets to mount metal boxes and beefier skid plates. (with shock absorption). Soft luggage option will solve one of those problems and you could beef up the standard YAMAHA unit. Cheers Graham
The GSA has abigger tank, but it needs it deerly, running at over 6 litres with the new DOHC heads and 23/5 gives the S10 460 Why would PIAlights not work on a s10 if there is no TT emblemon the bracket ? I really don't understand that bullshite aboutit having not enough farkles available,if you look at the plethora of mounting points and elektrical connectors, and the special ram-air cooled rectifier i think it will be able to cary any of the compulsary lighting needed in britain according to THINK! <object width="873" height="525"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/3-EDJj-gu2Q&hl=nl_NL&fs=1?rel=0&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/3-EDJj-gu2Q&hl=nl_NL&fs=1?rel=0&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="873" height="525"></embed></object> Would the Can-bus carry such a load ?
I wasn't so worried about the rectifier but the actual stator output Vs temperature. One of the little "weaknesses" of the Dl1K. The rect/reg is fine, it's just the stator that gets pissed off if you run it hard at higher temps. I have no clue what the output is of the S10. 300? 500? 3.6GigaWatts? As far as accessories go there is lots of stuff out there that is quite usable to a back yard tinkerer like me and you maybe. It's just that a lot of people wouldn't mod/fab up a bracket to hold boxes, lights etc or mod an existing bash plate or... Same as lots of people won't do their own services. Not me but I appear to be in the minority these days. If I liked the thing I'd just buy it. I would never buy a bike for 1 trip. It's up to the guy buying it. I'd just go for it and take a can if I wanted range and buy some farkles from something else and make 'em work but I'm commonly known as a resourceful tight If the accessories aren't there I will do something myself If I have to. Cheers Graham
The German Off-the-road has updated their website and as of now also run stuff for the new XT1200Z Super Tenere, along with tons of goodies for the XT660Z/R/X: www.off-the-road.de; www.kedo.com or www.kedo.de also do have some stuff now. Greetz, Hans.
Thanks for that. Have you posted that in the main thread? http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=545850 Cheers Graham
