A change in the World Supersport rulebook means we now get a new motorcycle from Italy. The MV Agusta F3 RR is coming next season, aimed at capturing wins on-track, and also a chunk of the sales that once belonged to four-cylinder 600s. It replaces the old F3 800 RC.
Here’s what’s going on. For years, World Supersport was a series built around four-cylinder 600 supersport bikes, because that’s what the Big Four sold. But, since Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha have basically abandoned the class, this leaves Kawasaki as the only manufacturer with a semi-relevant machine in the Euro series. The solution? Now, three-cylinder bikes up to 800 cc and twins up to 900 cc are now legal in World Supersport. It totally makes sense, as the races are mostly run in Europe, and Euro OEMs are the ones building those twins and triples.
MV Agusta must have had wind of this rule change, because now the Italian company has announced the F3 RR supersport, intended to fit into the new series’ rules.
It’s built around a 798 cc triple, which makes 145 horsepower in its street-legal configuration, or 153 horsepower if you install a race kit, which consists of Akrapovic muffler and a track-spec ECU.
As is expected with all modern sportbikes, there’s an electronics package, with six-axis IMU that manages the traction control and wheelie control systems. The leaning ABS system comes via Continental, which is eating up a bigger chunk of that market all the time. Riders will control these systems with a new set of handlebar controls in conjunction with a 5.5-inch TFT screen.
There’s also a set of carbon-fibre aerodynamic winglets, providing 17 pound-feet of downforce at 240 km/h. MV Agusta says they don’t slow the bike down, either.
The bike also gets a stronger frame, lighter wheels, and several other minor updates over the old F3 800 RC.
At this point, we don’t know anything about North American pricing or availability.
