Indian is looking to bring more power to its Challenger bagger, with the announcement of a new set of “Stage 2” performance cams.

The Challenger has been out for a year now, and did very well for itself at MotoAmerica’s Battle of the Baggers roadracing spectacle last fall. MotoAmerica’s planning a five-race bagger series for 2021, run alongside the superbike races with a #1 plate at year’s end and everything, and no doubt the Challenger will be attractive for racers. There were only two Indians signed up for the Laguna Seca baggers race, and those Challengers took first and third. That new liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine seemed to work very nicely, as well as the Indian’s handling.

The new performance cams (officially called the Stage 2 PowerPlus Performance Cams) are the same ones those baggers ran at Laguna Seca. Now they’re available for all Indian’s customers. Indian claims they boost horsepower by 10 percent (when combined with other necessary parts), which should work out to roughly 134 ponies at the crank. They’re priced at $699.99, but obviously you’ll spend more than that on the upgrade, when you factor in a new intake, new exhaust and other parts to take advantage of the cams’ capabilities, plus labour.

With the new MotoAmerica bagger series now open to anyone with an AMA licence, these cams are going to make Indian’s bikes a lot more attractive to non-factory riders. But what about the EPA and CARB, the environmental regulatory bodies that are ruining all the fun of engine modification? It’s hard to see those government agencies getting too upset about cams, although the other tuning parts might be more of a problem.

Race proven, the S&S Challenger, piloted by renowned motorcycle racer Tyler O’Hara, was race tuned to take on the legendry Laguna Seca Raceway and a field dominated by heavily modified Harley-Davidsons. While the winning Challenger received structural modifications to ergonomics, suspension, overall weight and more, only minimal tweaks were made to the Challenger’s stock PowerPlus engine. Among those were the use of the unreleased Stage 2 Performance Cams.
