I have just been notified that all Overland Expo Events scheduled for 2020 have been canceled.

The events referred to Overland Expo West in Flagstaff AZ, Overland Expo Mountain West in Loveland CO, and Overland Expo East in Arrington Virginia.

The reason cited by Lodestone Events Marketing and Communications is quite obvious, ‘Corona Virus’ and the potential risk that is still lurking. They are looking out for the safety and health of the attendees, exhibitors, and staff who are of course the utmost importance to the event, all three events. They had deliberated this for a number of months, doing their own research and seeking outside consultation with local officials, they have decided to postpone all in-person Overland Expo events until 2021.

So adjust your calendars now for 2021 when they promise to come back bigger and better and have a safer environment for all of us in a large group setting.

They are looking to do virtual events in the summer and fall to keep you going until the live events return next year.

An official video was released along with the notification of cancelation

An official press release was also issued by the group which you can read in its entirety below.

Overland Expo Series Postponed Until 2021

Due to health and safety concerns caused by novel coronavirus, all in-person 2020 Overland Expo events have been postponed until 2021.

Indianapolis, Indiana — All in-person Overland Expo events previously scheduled for 2020have been officially postponed until 2021. The event series will organize two more Virtual Overland Expo events later in 2020. In-person Overland Expo events will return in 2021.

The safety and health of Overland Expo’s attendees, exhibitors, and staff are of the utmost importance. After months of deliberation and consultation with local and national resources, event organizers made the difficult decision to postpone the entire in-person 2020 event series.

“We eagerly anticipate each Overland Expo. It’s more than the world’s premier overland and adventure travel event series; it’s a way to bring together the overland community and celebrate our shared passion,” said Lodestone Events Marketing and Communications VP Jessica
Kirchner.

“We explored every option for hosting an event that would adhere to the highest level of safety without compromising the event experience. Ultimately, we felt we could not in good conscience host a gathering of tens of thousands of overlanders for fear one of our events could threaten the health of those in the overlanding community and beyond.”

Committed to the Community Overland Expo remains committed to continuing to inspire the overland community even while we are not able to physically gather. Building on the success of its first-ever virtual event in May, Overland Expo will host two additional virtual events — planned for summer and fall of 2020 — to bring the community together online.

Beyond Overland Expo’s social channels, fans can read stories and learn more about the overland industry and community on the newly created Overland Expo Compass editorial hub in addition to the Overland Sourcebook, which will go all-digital this year. Overlanders who wish to be featured in the Overland Expo Community Spotlight are encouraged to share their adventures through the event website or by tagging Overland Expo on social @overlandexpo with the #myoverlandexpo hashtag.

Moving Forward

Although Overland Expo is mighty, the team is small. The event series is operated by a family-owned company with a team of just 14 passionate individuals. Postponing in-person events this year will be very challenging — both emotionally and financially. In order to keep the event series sustainable through this pandemic, leadership will forgo salaries and the Overland Expo staff will take significant pay cuts for the rest of 2020.

Event organizers are requesting attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors roll their tickets, sponsorships, or booth space over to a 2021 Overland Expo event. Rollovers will help keep staff employed through these unprecedented times, ensuring Overland Expo events can return in
next year.

If no action is taken by August 14, 2020, tickets, sponsorships, or booth space will be rolled into the corresponding Overland Expo in 2021. However, if a 2021 rollover is not financially feasible, full refunds will be issued upon request.

Ticketed attendees may request a refund or choose to take other actions here.

Sponsors and exhibitors may request a refund or choose to take other actions here.
