We’ve calculated the results of our second ADVRider.com Reader Shootout between the KTM 790 Adventure R and the BMW F 850 GS. Similar to our previous Reader Shootout of the KTM 1290 Adventure R and the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure, one bike won many more category ratings than the other. And, once again, the other machine won a few performance-intensive areas.
Before we get into the results, it’s best to recap what we asked you to do. You were asked you to rate the KTM 790 Adventure R and the BMW F 850 GS in ten different moto areas and also to provide an overall rating. Those areas were:
- Engine power
- Off-road capability
- Overall comfort
- Braking ability
- Electronic technology
- Control switches and settings
- Weather protection and engine temperature control
- Maintenance requirements
- Overall moto rating
You were asked to give each section a rating from 1 – 5 with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
Since you were not required to rate both motorcycles, and more people rated the KTM 790 Adventure R than the BMW F 850 GS, we weighted the averages to make sure our comparison was “apples to apples.”
Ultimately 66% of participants chose to rate the KTM while 34% decided to evaluate the BMW. Some of you also took the time to share our Reader Shootout on social media, and that unquestionably gave the survey a more comprehensive range of responses. Thank you, and please remember to share our other shootouts as they are posted. More opinions give more accurate results.
The final results were:
|Reader Shootout July 12 @ 3:00 PM||BMW||KTM|
|Control switches and settings||4.272||4.051|
|Weather protection and temperature control||3.889||3.148|
|Rate moto overall||4.234||4.159|
- Green font = category winner
- Red font = category loser
So when all is said and done, the BMW F 850 GS is the winner, with an average rating of 4.234. The KTM 790 Adventure R was not far behind with an overall score of 4.159. The BMW gained the win by winning 9 of the 11 categories, sometimes with a very significant margin.
On the other hand, it’s clear that the KTM won the hearts and minds who favor outright performance over all other categories, particularly in the off-road capability category, where it bested the BMW by over 4/10s of a point. But the KTM had some obvious losses in the other categories losing the weather protection and styling categories by nearly 3/4s of a point as well as the comfort category by more than 1/2 a point. Still, it’s clear that you like both machines with them garnering more than a four-point average based upon your inputs to the “rate the moto overall” category.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this Reader Shootout. We’ll have another one soon based on a suggestion in the comments section.
