I don't know what to say... that is some of the worse news I have heard in awhile but I think your attitude is one that many would aspire too. You and your family will be in my prayers.
@BluePill you are one legend for us wrr riders, I'm very sorry to read that. I think we all have a story with that shit. Some are positive, here is mine: a very good friend had to fight it almost 15 years ago (we were freaking young), he was an athlete. Here is the kind of pictures he is sending us these days... Carry on !
Is that an angel over his back? Funny but I bet some people think it’s the sun. No way I’d be where he is without my angel watching my back.
BluePill, I am very sorry to hear your news. I can't truly empathize, as I haven't had to deal with a personal health issue of that magnitude, but know that myself and many people here are saddened to hear of this. "Everything that has life will die sometime - that's the rules of the game" may become one of my signatures. (Don't worry, I'll attribute you.)
Couldn't have written it better. Prayers going out - we need you well and posting good advice here. Mark
Was thinking of you for a moment on this ride @BluePill. Specifically I was like “does his username refer to Viagra or what?” But I digress. Kick that cancer’s butt. These are from a great 200 mile loop I had the pleasure of doing today instead of going to work. There’s an access road to the Western Uintas off of Chalk Creek Rd that’s part of the UTBDR, I highly recommend it.
The screen name came from my age (65 at the time I chose it), as a Viagra reference. There was also famously the Blue Pill in the Matrix. And then I rode two blue Yamahas. I guess that makes it a Triple Entendre?
I know this has been discussed before, but what are good long lasting knobby tires that people are using on their WRs? I had been using IRC TR8s, but mileage wasn't fantastic (wasn't terrible either), but my final straw was after suffering a blowout on the Trans Lab due to a manufacturing defect and then IRC completely ignoring my attempts at reaching out to them. So I need a new tire. I'm only looking at DOT knobbies. I don't want any 50/50, 80/20, etc. I'm willing to sacrifice some street performance for dirt performance. BTW, here's a thread I started yesterday about my tire failure: https://advrider.com/f/threads/beware-of-irc-tires.1396832/
Some of the high milage knobbies have such hard rubber and are so heavy, they really negatively effect the WR. I really like the Kenda K270 on the WR. I do run a non DOT knobbies for local riding though.
Not a full knobby, but my Shinko 700 rear is getting a bit low. Was planing to try the Shinko 244 next... I understand that's pretty close to the Kenda 270... do you have a preference of the Kenda over the Shinko? In what way?
I really liked the Shinko over the Kenda on the DR650, the Shinko got better milage. Oddly, it is the opposite on the WR, I only get about 2k out of a Shinko on the WR. The Kenda is slightly more aggressive and I get like 4K. Make sure to buy the inch size Kenda and not the metric. The metric has a soft rubber compound and gets half the life.
Very interesting, thanks for the heads-up! Edit: for what it's worth, the Shinko 700 has been a great road focused tire... I've got 3500 miles on it now, and it's only just starting to really wear. It stinks for mud, but was great for the deep, loose shale in Bald Eagle State Forest, and it corners like a street tire on asphalt.
Same bikes, same trip, same roads, same milage. 2200 miles or so. Same Kenda K270. One is the 120 size and the other is the 4.5” size.
No idea, someone mentioned that they used to have the compounds listed in their specs but not anymore.
Was this from your Mexico trip between you and your friend that you thought was because of different riding styles? Did it turn out to be the different compounds from metric vs. inch? If so, that's crazy they would have the different compounds like that.
Hmmm, that knobby pattern actually doesn't look terrible despite being a 50/50 tire. Maybe I need to reconsider. How does it do in the mud and dirt on PA trails?
