The second virtual Overland Expo event runs this weekend, as organizers continue to spread the message of overland and adventure travel during a pandemic.
The original plan was to have three in-person Overland Expo gatherings for 2020–one in the southwestern desert, one in the Rockies, and one in the Appalachians. Instead, thanks to COVID, we’re getting virtual events. We’ve already had one in May, there’s one for this weekend (August 8, 2020), and there’s likely one coming this fall.
If you took in this spring’s virtual expo, you probably know what to expect already. The press release is promising basically the same stuff you’d expect at a normal OX event, but delivered virtually: Overland Education seminars covering skills that can keep you safe or comfortable on the road. Product demonstrations. A live Q&A session about overlanding in Alaska. A virtual campground contest, instead of the real in-person thing, showcasing overland trucks/bikes/vans, with the winner getting a $2,500 ultimate overland kitchen prize pack from sponsor Nomadica Outfitters. Virtual exhibitors and sponsors have savings for the virtual attendees (at least the savings aren’t virtual), and there are prize giveaways, too. There’s a new product showcase, keeping you up-to-date on the latest overland gadgetry. There’s also the Overland Film Festival, a “curated selection of short films from the overland community + interviews with the film producers.”
Is it the same as meeting in-person? Sadly, no, but at least it’s free to attend. Virtual Overland Expo West runs 9 AM-4 PM Pacific Daylight Time on Saturday, August 8. To access the virtual event, visit the Overland Expo website. If you can’t hang out virtually while the meet is live, Overland Expo says the content will be available afterwards through the website.
