Yamaha Europe and Yamaha Austria Racing Team (YART) have created a limited run of Petronas MotoGP replica Yamaha YZF-R1s. Only 46 of the numbered replicas will be made, for Europe only.
The bikes were created to celebrate 46 years of Petronas, the Malaysian oil and gas company that was established in 1974, and which is the title sponsor of the Yamaha satellite Sepang Racing Team in MotoGP. The Kuala Lumpur-based company is owned by the Malaysian government, and has been involved in Formula 1 and Touring Car racing, as well as MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3.
The bikes also coincide with the 20th anniversary of YART, as well as the opening of their new GYYR (Genuine Yamaha Technology for Racing) shop, one of only three in Euorpe.
The bikes are equipped with parts from GYTR, including a carbon fairing kit with MotoGP-inspired winglets, and a paint and graphics package straight from the same people that do the MotoGP team bikes. GYTR also provides the quick-change rear axle for fast and easy wheel changes. A racing ECU, race kit exhaust, racing footpegs, and a quick-action throttle bring the replicas that much closer to MotoGP-spec.
Öhlins provides their FGRT series forks and a TTX rear shock, as well as the steering damper. Naturally, Brembo provides the braking system, with their GP4-RX callipers, T-Drive discs, remote brake adjuster and clutch lever.
Michelin race slicks come standard, and combined with the lack of lights, signals and mirrors, points to the replicas being track-only machines.
Priced at €46,000, the lucky owner of one of these replicas will also receive a KYT helmet, Petronas Yamaha shirt, and a VIP guest pass to the MotoGP round of their choosing.
